The car is sitting on a ruined tire in a Mission Valley garage, on the shoulder of I-15, or in a Chula Vista lot. You need it moved. The live decision is the drop: a tire shop that can mount a new one, or a repair shop that can take a bent wheel, a hub, or steering that no longer turns. Settle that before anyone loads the car.
Start with the tire, wheel, and steering condition
The tire, the wheel, and the steering tell you more than the shop’s name. The operator we dispatch needs a destination that can receive the car.
A torn sidewall, gone tread, two flats, no spare, or a donut that’s also flat means the car stays put. The roadside-versus-tow split is in flat tire towing in San Diego. This page is where the car goes next.
A cracked rim, a wheel at an odd angle, or a hub wet with grease is more than rubber. A tire shop can mount a new tire on a sound wheel. A bent or seized assembly belongs at a repair shop or a dealer lane. A wheel that will not turn, or grinding when you roll the car a few inches, changes how the driver sent out loads it. Tell dispatch what you see.
Stay out of traffic. NHTSA roadside safety guidance says get out of live lanes if you can, stay visible, and wait for help. On I-5, I-15, I-8, or SR-163, use the right shoulder. East of El Cajon on I-8, or on SR-67, use a turnout. During Freeway Service Patrol hours, call 511 for roadside assistance. SANDAG’s published average dispatch is about nine minutes. FSP can change a flat when a spare is usable. It is not a tow to a shop you name, and it skips federal holidays. Midday and weekend patrol also skip SR-905 and SR-11.
Leave the car where it sits. The destination decision happens at that pin.
Confirm which shop can accept the vehicle
A shop that sells tires is not automatically a drop that can take a disabled car off a truck. Call the destination before you request the pickup.
Hours change across the county. Oceanside, Carlsbad, and Encinitas shops often close early on weeknights. Kearny Mesa and Miramar Road stay busy during the day. El Cajon, Santee, and Alpine thin out after dark. National City, Chula Vista, and San Ysidro stay busy on the boulevards, then close.
Ask four things: whether they can take a tow drop at the hour you’ll arrive, where the driver unloads, what happens to the keys, and what they will actually work on. A downtown garage, a Pacific Beach alley, and an open lot on El Cajon Boulevard are three different unloads. A tire-only store may refuse a bent control arm, a leaking hub, or an EV they don’t service. For the dealer-versus-independent version of this choice, read tow the car to a dealership or a repair shop.
AAA through the Auto Club of SoCal can take you to a tire shop inside your plan’s tow distance. Every tier includes up to four roadside service calls per year. Classic covers about 5 to 7 miles, Plus up to 100, and Premier one 200-mile tow with remaining calls at 100 miles.
Owner-requested prices are set between you and the operator, which is how California Vehicle Code 22651.07 describes that kind of tow. The City of San Diego’s published impound fee schedule is a different system for city tows through AutoReturn. Get the operator’s price for your pickup and destination before they hook the car.
When a tire shop may fit the destination
A tire shop is the right drop when the problem looks limited to the rubber, and the shop has already said they can take the car.
That usually means one or two flats, a blown tread, a puncture you can see, no spare, or a spare that’s also down. Plenty of late-model cars around San Diego no longer carry a full-size spare. A kit does not help a shredded sidewall on I-15 through Mira Mesa, or two flats after a construction stretch on SR-94.
A tire shop also fits when they stock your size and confirmed a bay. Low-profile sizes, run-flats, and some EV wheel packages are not on every wall in the county. A shop in Kearny Mesa may have the size. A small shop in Fallbrook or Pine Valley may need to order it. Confirm stock before the truck rolls.
If the wheel looks intact, the car still steers, and the shop will mount or replace the tire, send the operator there. Give dispatch the shop name, street address, and unload notes.
Flatbed towing is often how the operator moves a car that should not roll on a damaged tire. That is a loading choice from what you describe and what they see on scene, not a rule we can declare for every vehicle. Tesla’s Model 3 instructions say all tires stay off the ground during transport. Give the year, make, model, and drivetrain so the driver sent out can match the method to the car.
When a repair shop may fit better
A repair shop, or a dealer service lane, is the better drop when the tire is the part you can see and the rest of the corner looks wrong.
Use a repair shop when the wheel sits at an angle, the car has dropped on one corner, or the wheel will not turn. Use one when you heard a bang and the steering is off, fluid is under the hub, or an axle boot is torn. Use one after a curb, pothole, or median hit. Use one when a tire shop already refused an EV or hybrid, or when you need hub, brake, or alignment work in the same visit.
Coastal streets in La Jolla and Pacific Beach chew sidewalls on low-profile wheels. East County grades and I-8 heat are hard on rubber. A failure after a pothole on El Cajon Boulevard or a curb in a downtown garage is often a wheel and suspension job. South Bay industrial streets and Otay Mesa truck traffic leave debris that can take out a tire and a rim together.
A tire shop that only mounts tires will send you on anyway. Starting at the shop that will own the repair saves a second tow. The operators in our network can take a car to either destination in every city in San Diego County. The destination still has to accept the drop.
What dispatch needs before pickup
Have the destination locked before the truck is assigned. That is the difference between a clean drop and a car sitting on a bed in a closed lot.
Give dispatch your exact pin: freeway mile marker, exit, lot name, garage level, or cross street. “Near Fashion Valley” is not enough. “Fashion Valley, upper garage, near Macy’s” is. On I-8, name the direction and the exit.
Describe what you can see: which tire, whether the wheel looks bent, whether the car will roll or steer, and whether it is an EV, AWD, lowered, or locked. Add the shop’s full street address, the unload spot, and the key or drop-box rule. Flag access limits: parking-structure height, a dirt shoulder on SR-67, an HOA gate in Rancho Bernardo, a one-way alley in North Park.
If you are on a freeway, stay out of the lanes. Emergency towing is the path for a disabled car that cannot sit there. The line takes calls any time, day or night. The operator who takes the job gives you an arrival estimate for that pin.
You can get a car towed to a tire shop. Match the damage to a shop, confirm they can take the car, then call with that address. The pros we connect you with are licensed and insured. They set the price. They get paid by you. We make the match.
When to call us
If the car cannot roll safely, you have no usable spare, or the shop you want is ready for a tow-in, leave the jack in the trunk. Call (858) 923-5787 to reach dispatch. We’ll match you with a licensed operator who can move the car to the tire shop or repair shop that already said yes.
